The Legacy of Earrings
Earrings have become quite a staple of today's society and culture. It is arguably the most common and popular type of jewellery nowadays. No matter if for a special occasion or normal wear, you see them everywhere. They have a ranging, expansive and very interesting history that dates back to Ancient Egypt.
As mentioned, one of the earliest sightings of earrings is in fact Ancient Egypt. First seen as a sign of wealth, commonly amongst leaders like Tutankhamun. Then spreading throughout that society from there, the more rich would having earrings with pearls and gold to seperate themselves from the rest. (Even the cats of Egypt wore earrings, as depicted by paintings of the time period!)
In the middle ages, they saw a drop off in this fashion. Due to an ever-changing culture with new waves of hairstyles which didn't align with with the wearing of earrings, as well as the outfits like high collars and even just the fact it was looked down upon for a married woman to leave the house without covering her head. It just didn't fit in with the conventions of that time.
It wasn't until the renaissance period that things begain to shift and change. Society was at a point of a complete makeover of how things were done, including bringing back earrings which attracted the masses. They became a massive fashion statement, adopting many different styles and looks. Even pirates of the time wore them. Whether it be to signify their vast exploration of the deep seas, or wearing gold earrings in the chance that they drown and wash ashore so they then had something to pay for a nice funeral!
This wasn't a completely locked in addition though, people found them heavy and therefore damaging to the earlobes at times. It was really in the 1900s, particularly the 60s which reinvented and captalised on earrings, normalising them. They became lighter, simpler and easier to manage. The boom caused in the 60s fashion wise created a step in the door for earrings once again, which became an everyday essential item.
